One of the best things about having a tool box is the ability to start a DIY project at any given point in time, have the right tools to finish the job and then sit back and revel in your handiness afterwards. Getting creative, fixing things and even passing on invaluable skills to the next generation are all part and parcel of what is it like to own a tool box.
For many, owning a fully stocked box of tools for DIY and other purposes is a signifier that they have made it as a responsible, fully functioning adult. For others, it simply means being prepared for every eventuality. If you don’t yet own any DIY tools, then now is your chance!
Why do you need tools?
First and foremost, a tool box will benefit the entire family. Building furniture, loosening bolts on a new washing machine, fixing the car, the bike and even the lawn mower – you even need a screwdriver to change the batteries on some appliances!
Secondly, you can teach the next generation or even your other half how to do these tasks with you. Not only is it a bonding experience, but it is a learning one, too. It also encourages you to learn new methods and techniques, and put tools to use in ways you didn’t even think were possible.
Which tools are essential for DIY?
As mentioned previously, there are any number of household tasks and chores that require tools, and at some point or another, you will need at least one of them. When looking to buy your own set of tools, there are a few items considered essential.
Of course, always buy the very best DIY tools that you can afford – this will save you having to replace them a year or so down the line.
When looking to stock a tool box, you might consider getting:
- Philips and Flathead screwdrivers in various sizes. Better yet, get a handle with interchangeable tips!
- Tape measure
- Handsaw
- Spirit Level
- Stanley Knife
- Claw hammer
- Pliers
- Wrench
- Spanners
- Wire stripper
- Allen keys
- Power drill
- Torch
It is also worth ensuring you have a solid, sturdy ladder or step ladder as well as a variety of screws and nails available to save you time should an emergency crop up.
For all these DIY tools and more, please visit our webstore and stock up your toolbox with just a few clicks of a mouse. We stock a wide variety of tools, brand names you will know and trust and offer extremely competitive prices. Please contact us should you require any further information.

“It takes half your life before you discover life is a do it yourself project.”
– Napoleon Hill
So, now that you have got your home renovation done by the professionals, what about those niggly bits you are often left with, post-improvement? It is always good to remember, that nobody will complete any job in accordance with our very own personal standards or expectations, but that’s where Tool Devil comes in.
Now, first thing’s first, when learning a new skill, it is important to educate yourself on the basics of it, at the very least. The more you know, the better the result. Although, saying that, sometimes we tend to learn more from our mistakes, but we’d rather get it nailed the first time.
- To prevent any of those tell-tale creaks and squeaks with your wood flooring, use a construction adhesive. Secure the plank joists with a little glue and make use of that caulking gun for added precision
- Always check woodwork is done to your specific requirements and try to avoid paying for the entire renovation before you have scrutinised and checked every tiny detail
- If paintwork is something you have a good understanding in, you are better off doing this yourself and save yourself another expense
- Ensure visual construction such as skirting boards, coving and any core aesthetic-based work is carried out with ultimate precision
- Quality most definitely counteracts quantity here, as it is far better to buy the highest quality of tools and materials. Investing in quality tools is a lot more beneficial lifespan wise; potentially saving you a lot of money in the long run
- When purchasing your DIY tools, always purchase them from a reputable supplier, such as Tool Devil. Check out our online hardware shop for anything and everything you need, here
- Carpeting the base of your beloved toolbox will make for a quieter environment to work in as well as protection for your DIY tools. Try lightly spraying machine oil onto your carpet base to keep those tools rust-free
It is worth always having the correct tools to hand for maintenance, and, in the event of any breakage and repairs. Remember, sufficient preparation and knowledge can go a long way towards the completion of your home improvement project.
And, to ensure you obtain those correct, top-quality DIY tools, what better place to come than to every handyman’s equivalent of DIY paradise?

“If you want something done right, do it yourself!” - One wise man said
Makes sense, doesn’t it? If you’re anything like the perfectionist in us here at Tool Devil, then you’ll be saving yourself a lot of time later discovering those cowboy mistakes and rushed jobs many people have fallen victim to in recent years.
Tool Devil has put together a few tips for those of you out there looking to improve your home. As it’s your property, nobody can do it better than you, as anything less than perfection is not an option you would settle for, right?
Good. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get you started with some ideas for those long awaited home improvements, shall we?
Now, the bigger the home improvement project, such as the three we have listed below, the more likely it will be appointed to the professionals, but the question is, are they perfectionists?
It is, therefore, of great importance to ensure you are hiring a trusted and reputable company to carry out your project for you. Furthermore, it is always a good idea to get some references for work previously carried out by them, too.
Now, where were we? Ah yes, home improvements…
Conservatory
Many people opt to add a conservatory to their home for numerous reasons. Not only does it provide additional room and light in your living space, but it can also do wonders for increasing the value of your home, too. Many people benefit from this additional room in the house as a makeshift gym, relaxing area, romantic dinners, sun lounging, and so much more. We would, of course, advise you to speak to reputable windows and conservatories suppliers out there, and compare quotes, before settling one a contractor.
Loft Conversion
There are many factors you need to look into before deciding to go ahead with a loft or basement construction. Is your house sturdy enough? Is the area insulated and free of asbestos? What do you currently store in there, and do you have sufficient alternative space for it? Are you adding a bathroom to the extension? Can your boiler cope with this additional feed? Is there sufficient headroom? Will you need the house rewiring for electricity? What about windows and natural light and ventilation? Do you have a means of access to and from the room, such as a safe stairwell? Have you checked current planning and building permission regulations relevant to your area? Adding a loft conversion can add significant value to your home, but unless you choose your contractor wisely, it cost a lot more than you planned, too.
Garage Conversion
Usually the home to your handy toolbox, but with so much more potential besides!
Many people own a garage or even double garage and tend to leave them relatively empty. Whether it is a hassle having to park the car inside and then the whole process of opening and closing the door, or the fact that they simply just don’t know what to do with it! How about converting it into an outhouse or annexe to your property? This could come in particularly handy for when family and friends visit and stay over, or if you need some space where you won’t be disturbed. You could even kit this out with an en suite bathroom facility, or a studio kitchen area with fridge – maybe even both!
Ensure you shop around and get as many quotes as you can before work starts to enable you to make an informed decision on any potential return on investment at resale. It is also important to make sure you are aware of the impact of the additional space on your overhead and utility bills. Most importantly, however – ensure you get planning permission first!
Stay tuned for part two of our home improvement special, where we give you tips on how to use your prized DIY tool collection for the next most important aspect of your new home improvement; maintaining it.
In the meantime, for all your quality woodworking supplies and DIY tool needs, visit Tool Devil today.

When it comes to undertaking DIY in and around your home, preparation is vital. Regardless of how big the task at hand is, if you don’t have the right tools to work with, then you’re not going to get very far, whilst also risking injury.
One of the biggest reasons people injure themselves in DIY is because they are using the wrong tool or are unsure of how to use it correctly. Consequently, a vast number of people end up in hospital after attempting a DIY job without thinking it through.
Knowing which DIY tools to use for which jobs is really quite important. By understanding the type of job you are about to undertake, the easier the preparation will be.
Everyday Tools
These are the sort of tools you can find easily in a supermarket or DIY store. Light use tools such as hammers, screwdrivers and pliers are great for assembling furniture, hanging a picture, changing a plug and other minor repairs around your home. They don’t require much skill, just a steady hand and a little precision.
DIY Tools
These DIY tools - the saw, the drill, spanners and wrenches, will be familiar to you if you consider yourself something of a DIY project master. Habitual DIY fans that start month-long projects and are always looking for something else to tinker with, build or create; have honed their skills over many years of trial and error.
Heavy Duty Tools
These heavy duty power tools are made for everyday use by trained and qualified professionals. These tend to be bigger pieces of kit with more attachments that you could ever believe necessary, but they are for serious building and construction work.
As well as ensuring you have the right tools for the job, it is also important to work in a clean, safe environment. With dirty rags, piles of sawdust and tools scattered around, your workspace is potentially an accident waiting to happen. Refuse to be a statistic and tidy as you go, to stay safe.

Whether you like to get stuck into household DIY tasks or work as a tradesman, there are a number of power tools out there that are handy to have around. Not only can they make light work of otherwise long-winded tasks that require power behind them, but they are also extremely good to work with.
Our online hardware shop here at Tool Devil in the UK has a broad range of power tools available to suit your every need, on the job or in your home. There are many discussions and debates flying around about the most essential power tools that anyone can have in their power tool arsenal – so we have decided to settle it, once and for all.
We have come up with a list of the basic power tools available on the market for you to pick and choose from, at will.
The Cordless Drill
As one of the most used pieces in the power tool world, the cordless drill is a long standing member of the power tool basics and essentials. Not only is it a fast and hard worker, but the versatility and lack of a cord makes any task seem like a walk in the park. If you haven’t got one yet, you need to. If you do, you know it’s hard to live without it.
For best results, real power and conviction with use, opt for an 18V cordless drill.
The Hammer Drill
The Hammer Drill is more than just your standard drill. As well as rotating and turning, this drill also hammers the screw forwards, halving the time spent drilling. This is especially important when dealing with harder external walls and tougher materials.
The Jigsaw
The Jigsaw is a multipurpose power tool that is seen as an essential to many tradesmen across the UK and the world, and it’s not hard to see why. With the flexibility to move the saw with you as you cut, you are able to create complex and varied designs with ease.
The Screwdriver
If you have a task that requires a lot of screws being used, then a screwdriver power tool is ideal. Not only does it take a fraction of the time as the more traditional method, but it also allows you to remove and replace screws with ease.
There are many other types of power tool available in our online hardware shop – you need only browse or search the product category list to find what you are looking for.
From basic power tools, through to accessories, other tools for private use and trade consumables, there is something to suit all needs.
Please contact us for more information regarding any of our power tools or to speak to our team about something in particular; we’d love to help.

Whether you are in the shed, on site at work or doing an everyday DIY chore around the home; there is one thing you should always keep in mind, and that is to stay safe at all times.
Health and safety rules and guidelines are recommended to keep you free from harm when you are at risk, so it is in your best interests to follow them!
Not all DIY tools come with a user manual; some don’t need them - like a screwdriver, whereas others would really benefit from some instructions for use. Similarly, it is important to know how to complete the task you are about to undertake before you do it! One of the biggest reasons behind accidents in the home is not knowing how to do a job but doing it anyway. Here at Tool Devil, we highly recommend that you do NOT do this.
Accidents Happen
When you’re at work, there will always be health and safety training, various courses to attend, forms to fill out and risk assessments to be completed, all aiming to keep you safe from harm. However, when you are at home or in the shed; there are no forms, no training courses and no risk assessments. This means you need to be extra vigilant, especially when using DIY tools, such as a power drill or circular saw.
It is important to wear safety goggles and protective overalls when using hazardous materials, working with wood, metal, paint, etc. Using the correct safety equipment will ensure accidents are kept to a minimum.
For more health and safety advice when working with DIY tools on a home project, please read this safety guide from the BBC.
There are so many ways in which you can hurt yourself while doing DIY work. It is important to know what needs emergency medical attention and what can be looked after at home.
Should you wind up with a severe wound and bleeding or suspect a broken bone, it’s time to head down to A&E. If you think you have suffered a sprain or strain, then please elevate the limb, add ice to reduce swelling and rest. If the pain is severe and the patient can’t move their limb, please seek advice by dialling the NHS Helpline on 111.
The Bane of DIY Life
While the injuries mentioned above are indeed dangerous situations to be in, they are also relatively rare. What is more common and can often feel just as painful, however, are injuries such as cuts, scratches, grazes and splinters. These pesky injuries can be annoyingly painful when using DIY tools!
If you find yourself with a painful nick, a splinter or a graze, your first step is to clean the area with warm water and mild soap. Pat dry with a paper towel and assess what needs to be done.
In the case of cuts and scrapes, this will involve an antibacterial cream and dressing to keep dirt and bacteria out of the wound.
When it comes to splinters, the most important thing to remember is DON’T SQUEEZE IT! Squeezing can break the splinter and push it deeper into your skin.
Identify the depth, angle and size of the splinter before deciding on how to remove it. There are so many ways of doing this safely with everyday household items; such as a banana, baking soda, potato and some duct tape. For more information on any of these splinter removal methods, please visit this website.
Remember, do not use a needle or anything sharp to remove your splinter without first using these tried and tested methods! You will soon be pain and splinter free!
For more helpful resources and advice, please keep checking back on our blog or browse our website for all your DIY tool needs. If you require any help or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our customer service team today.
